23 local surfers and their families turned out on Saturday to carry out some maintenance on a track to one of their local beaches.

There was a great turn out despite the windy weather and the many hands made light work of the 20 tonnes of aggregate to be spread.

The materials were provided by the WISE volunteer project which aims to encourage volunteering on local paths and to improve access to the local environment.

Since the project began in 2012 the WISE project has run 47 one off volunteering sessions, carried out maintenance work on 14 different footpaths and involved over 350 people.LydiaCallanishweb

At the end of the session one of the volunteers commented "That, was really good fun" and some of the volunteers were already talking about arranging another session in the future. Two of the young volunteers were presented with Callanish Awards for under 12's Volunteering.

WISE is supported by Scottish Natural Heritage and the Big Fund through the Young Start programme and it is managed by the Volunteer Centre Western Isles, who are always there to support volunteer involving organisations and to help people find suitable volunteering.
